Carter Grange’s Innovative Designs for Multigenerational Homes
One of the most significant challenges facing modern families in 2025 is the escalating cost of living. As expenses continue to rise, families are increasingly adopting a strategic approach to their finances, resulting in a heartwarming trend: the resurgence of multigenerational living.
The adage, “it takes a village,” resonates more than ever today. This enduring wisdom highlights the growing realisation that raising a family is often more manageable and fulfilling with the support of loved ones close by. More families are choosing to live together across generations, and there are plenty of reasons behind this delightful shift.
For many, housing affordability is a crucial factor driving the growth of multigenerational living (UNSW Sites, 2025). Initially motivated by financial considerations, families often find themselves staying for the emotional and practical support it offers. Imagine a household where grandparents share their wisdom while helping with homework, where parents can focus on their careers knowing their children are in loving hands, and where everyone contributes to the family’s well-being.
Amid rising financial pressures across various age groups, young adults find it increasingly challenging to move out on their own, while older generations are opting for in-home assistance rather than relocating to age-specific facilities.
A recent report from The Australian Institute of Family Studies underscores this trend, revealing that more than half (51%) of young men in their early twenties lived with their parents in 2021, compared to 46% in 2006. For young women, the figures were similarly telling: 43% of women aged 20-24 were living at home in 2021, up from 36% in 2006 (aifs.gov.au, n.d.).
Innovative builders and construction companies are now responding to this trend by designing homes that cater to multigenerational living needs. At Carter Grange, we are proud to embrace this movement, offering customisable designs that adapt to every one of life’s stages.
